Residence
Fanusi is a Kiswahili name for the lamp at the back of a dhow that guides other dhows safely to harbor.
A project of Kianda Foundation, Fanusi Study Centre for women opened in 1987 to cater for the growing number of university students seeking a supportive residential and study environment that nurtures academic excellence, character formation, leadership skills, and personal growth.
Our Facility
Fanusi Residence offers accommodation to university women students.
Facilities offered include:
- A pleasant, clean, and homely living environment
- Excellent study facilities, including quiet study rooms and a well-equipped library with reliable Wi-Fi access
- A chapel for reflection and spiritual activities
- A well-balanced, healthy diet, with two meals provided on weekdays and three meals on weekends
- Conference and comfortable sitting rooms for meetings and relaxation
- Ample parking space for residents and visitors
- Beautifully maintained garden that offer a calm and refreshing outdoor space
The residents also have the opportunity to attend mentoring sessions, professional and cultural activities organised by the Study Centre.

A Day in the Life at Fanusi
Life at Fanusi is structured yet warm, combining focused study, nourishing meals, meaningful community, and peaceful spaces for rest and reflection. Each day is designed to support academic excellence, personal growth, and a balanced lifestyle.
Study Time
The day includes dedicated periods for individual study in quiet study rooms and the library. Residents enjoy a calm, disciplined study culture supported by an atmosphere that encourages concentration and academic focus.
Meals
Meals at Fanusi are a time for nourishment and connection. Residents enjoy healthy, well-balanced meals prepared to support both physical well-being and academic performance. Shared mealtimes also provide an opportunity for relaxed conversation and community bonding.
Garden & Common Spaces
Fanusi’s garden and common spaces offer a calm environment for relaxation, reflection, and informal conversations. These areas help residents recharge, enjoy fresh air, and build friendships outside structured study time.
Community Values
At Fanusi, community life is guided by shared values of respect, responsibility, and service. Residents are encouraged to care for one another, contribute positively to the community, and grow not only academically but also in character.
Library Access
The library is open to all residents. Non resident students may also access the library upon completing a simple application process and paying a small fee. Operating hours for non-residents run from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekdays and 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekends. During exam periods, extended hours may be offered to support focused study.For security and to maintain a safe environment, non resident access is typically granted to well-known students.
The library offers a range of resources, including books, journals, digital materials, and reliable Wi-Fi.
To maintain a welcoming and productive environment, all users are expected to follow respectful behavior, observe quiet zones, and handle library materials with care. Borrowing policies are in place for both residents and visitors, ensuring that resources are available for everyone.
