About Fanusi
Fanusi is a Kiswahili name for the lamp at the back of a dhow that guides other dhows safely to harbor.
A project of Kianda Foundation, Fanusi Study Centre for women opened in 1987 to cater for the growing number of university students seeking a supportive residential and study environment that nurtures academic excellence, character formation, leadership skills, and personal growth.
We welcome university women from institutions in Nairobi and its environs, across all years of study, from first year to postgraduate level, regardless of faith background, in a values-based environment that respects and supports personal beliefs.
In addition, we offer a variety of activities that support holistic student development, including:
- Academic Support – Study rooms, structured quiet hours, peer study groups, and exam preparation support.
- Leadership & Career Development – Mentoring, career talks, and professional clubs grouped by profession such as GN3
- Personal Development – Soft Skills, Communication skills training and confidence-building workshops much needed in the workplace
- Spiritual Formation Doctrinal classes, recollections, chapel activities, and volunteer social projects organised in partnership with Volunteer Connect (participation is optional).
- Social & Cultural Life – Talent shows, cultural evenings, World Youth Day activities, cookery sessions, excursions among many other exciting activities.
The spiritual and doctrinal formation offered at the Centre has been entrusted to Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church.

Who can apply?
University women from institutions in Nairobi and its environs, across all years of study.
Is accommodation limited
Yes. Due to our small-scale, homely environment, spaces are limited to 14 residents.
Is Wi-Fi included?
Yes. Wi-Fi access is available throughout the Study Centre, including study rooms and common areas.
Is there a specific application deadline?
No. Applications are considered throughout the year on a rolling basis until spaces are filled.
Is participation in spiritual activities mandatory?
No. Fanusi is a values-based environment that respects personal beliefs. Participation in spiritual activities is optional.
Can non-Catholics apply?
Yes. Fanusi Study Centre is open to students of all faith backgrounds and is founded on shared human and ethical values.
Are meals compulsory?
Yes. Residents receive a well-balanced and healthy meal plan that includes two meals per day on weekdays and three meals on weekends as part of the accommodation package.
What security measures are in place?
Fanusi provides a safe and secure living environment with controlled access, resident supervision, and clear house guidelines to ensure the wellbeing of all residents.

- Interview invitation – Shortlisted applicants are invited for an interview to assess mutual fit and understanding of life at Fanusi.
- Admission decision – Successful applicants receive an admission offer.
